Abstract

The Fāṭimid Caliphate, founded in the late 3rd century AH in the Islamic Maghreb and relocated to Egypt in the mid-4th century AH, emerged as a prominent politico-religious power in the Islamic world. Among its various periods, the reign of al-Ḥākim bi-Amr Allāh (375–411 AH) stands out as one of the most controversial phases, playing a pivotal role in the structural transformations and delegitimization of the Fāṭimid Caliphate. This study aims to critically analyze the religious, social, and political dimensions of al-Ḥākim’s caliphate and to assess the consequences of his policies on the Ismāʿīlī authority structure. Using a descriptive–analytical approach and drawing upon primary historical sources as well as contemporary research, the study seeks to reconstruct and evaluate the developments during al-Ḥākim’s rule. The findings reveal that his reign was marked by significant ideological and political fluctuations. Initially characterized by religious tolerance and support for knowledge, his policies gradually shifted toward social restrictions, doctrinal rigidity, and tolerance toward extremist movements such as the Druze movement. These discursive shifts weakened the strategic coherence of the caliphate and eroded the symbolic capital of the Imam–Caliph, paving the way for ideological fragmentation and political crises. The study concludes that the caliphate of al-Ḥākim bi-Amr Allāh represents a striking example of the tension between charismatic authority and institutional stability in medieval Shīʿī caliphates. Analyzing this period contributes to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of legitimacy, divergence, and religious authority within caliphal structures.
