Rereading the historical geography and political position of Kerman in the Achaemenid period

Abstract

Kerman, the largest province of Iran, is located in the southeastern part of the Iranian Plateau and has long been regarded as one of the major centers of civilization and historical development in this region. Archaeological evidence recovered from sites such as Tepe Eblis, Tepe Yahya, Shahdad, and Jiroft attests to the ancient background and long-standing significance of this land. The aim of the present study is to elucidate the position of the historical geography of Kerman within the political, administrative, and economic structure of the Achaemenid Empire and to examine its role in the development of the eastern Iranian Plateau. This research is conducted using the historical method and a descriptive–analytical approach, based on library research and the analysis of historical and geographical sources, as well as Achaemenid inscriptions. The findings of the study indicate that, due to its distinctive geographical position between Persis, Parthia, Gedrosia, and the Persian Gulf, Kerman played an effective role in the political, economic, and communication networks of the Achaemenid Empire. Furthermore, this region was initially part of the province of Persis; however, following the political transformations of the reign of Darius I, it gradually emerged as an administrative unit distinct from Persis within the framework of the Achaemenid satrapal system. The contribution of this study lies in presenting an integrated analysis of the relationship between geography and politics in Achaemenid-period Kerman and in clarifying the position of this region within the administrative structure of the empire. Among the limitations of the research are the dispersion of historical data and the scarcity of direct sources concerning the precise boundaries and administrative organization of Kerman during the Achaemenid period.
