In the 10th century AH (16th century CE), the Zaydi Imams of Yemen sought to revive their political and religious authority but encountered numerous internal and external challenges. This study examines the political challenges faced by the Zaydi movement in Yemen during this period. The central research question explores the primary obstacles confronting the Zaydi Imams in the 10th century AH and assesses the impact of these factors on their political performance. The hypothesis posits that a combination of intra-familial tensions and external threats contributed to the weakening of the Zaydis and their failure to establish a stable political state. The research adopts a historical-analytical approach, grounded in primary sources and reliable scholarly literature. The findings indicate that internal conflicts, divisions within the Zaydi community, the invasions of the Circassian Mamluks, attacks by the Ottomans and the Portuguese, and the pressure exerted by the Shafiʿi Tahirid dynasty (r. 858–945 AH / 1454–1538 CE) were among the key factors in the Zaydis’ political decline. These dynamics not only curtailed the political influence of the Zaydis but also had a profound impact on the historical trajectory of Yemen.
