The founders of the Mojahedin-e-Khalgh organization (MEK) were, prior to its formation, a group of young affiliates of the Freedom Movement of Iran who did not accept its militant approach and believed that the Freedom Movement's strategy would lead nowhere. For this reason, in 1971 (1350 SH), they broke away from the Freedom Movement and announced their existence. The organization's early leaders were initially committed to Islamic principles of thought, but gradually gravitated toward Marxist-Leninist viewpoints. In 1975 (1354 SH), the organization declared in a statement that Islamic ideology lacked the capacity for armed struggle against despotism and imperialism, and consequently, in that same year, it officially adopted the principles of socialist doctrine. During the second Pahlavi era, the Mojahedin-e-Khalgh carried out various activities against the regime. Following the exposure of their safe houses, most of their members were arrested and imprisoned, and a number were executed. With the victory of the Islamic Revolution, Rajavi, with the help of his associates, rebuilt the organization and sought to seize power entirely, but he was unsuccessful. Hence, on June 20, 1981 (30 Khordad 1360 SH), the organization launched military operations against the Islamic Republic. Following the failure of the strategy of armed uprising and Rajavi's escape to France, the organization sought an opportunity to overthrow the Islamic Republic. The Iran–Iraq War provided such an opportunity for the organization. This research has been conducted using a descriptive-analytical method and a library-based approach. In this study, the authors seek to answer the question of how the Mojahedin-e-Khalgh organization was formed and what led to its intellectual deviation. It appears that the organization, due to its totalitarianism and adoption of socialist thought, failed to align itself with the slogans and ideology of the Islamic Revolution and instead stood in opposition to it.
