[English]

Some leaders of totalitarian regimes had a cult of personality and held a godlike status in the eyes of their adherents. More precisely, they were believed to be infallible against any mistake, to possess superhuman abilities, and to have all the goodness and virtues of humanity embedded in them. Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Kim Il-sung, and Kim Jong-Il are prominent examples of these leaders. Having used a descriptive, analytical, and deductive method and a historical approach, the paper is going to answer this question: What were the factors in the emergence of the cult of personality in totalitarian regimes, and why did the leaders of these regimes acquire a godlike status? The findings of the paper show that the lack of a democratic tradition in totalitarian countries, which had prevented political participation and practice and had stunted the political maturity of the people, the populist abilities and charms of totalitarian leaders, and their pretence of simplicity and distancing from the general public, which created a mysterious image of them, were the most important factors in the emergence of personality cults. These factors, under the shadow of extensive and purposeful government propaganda, achieved maximum effectiveness and created a god-like and ideal image of totalitarian leaders for people who did not have a sufficient understanding of politics for centuries and had experienced a life devoid of political activism.
