[English]

The Parsi community of India, descendants of Iranian-Zoroastrian migrants, played a role far exceeding their demographic size in the social, cultural, and educational transformations of colonial India. Concentrated mainly in urban centers, particularly Bombay, Parsis became pioneers of educational modernization through their close interaction with British colonial institutions and their active engagement with Western education. This study examines the role of Parsis in the development of modern education and its cultural implications in Bombay between 1800 and 1920. Employing a descriptive–analytical approach and relying on historical documents and secondary sources, the study explores Parsi contributions to educational institutions, women’s education, and intellectual reform movements. The findings indicate that Parsis significantly contributed to the establishment of modern schools, the dissemination of scientific knowledge, the promotion of Persian and English languages, and the institutionalization of educational reforms during the colonial period. Their educational initiatives not only enhanced the socio-cultural position of the Parsi community but also facilitated the emergence of a modern middle class, women’s empowerment, and intercultural exchange in urban India. Furthermore, Parsi engagement in education enabled the transmission of Iranian cultural and managerial elements into the Indian context, creating a form of cultural synergy between Iran and India. The study concludes that the Parsi experience represents a remarkable example of how a small minority community can influence modernization processes through strategic investment in education and cultural adaptation.
